The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Youth Council will be an important and diverse group of young leaders committed to making a difference in CBRM. The Youth Council will work on issues important to youth! Youth Council members represent young people will represent young people in the community. They will meet with leaders like the Mayor and Council, Police, Business leaders, and community groups to advocate for youth.

The Youth Council will have decision making authority over their budget; opportunity for training; support of an advisory group; and most important – the youth will decide the setup of the youth council.

Now, we are calling for committed young leaders between the ages of 16-22 with the time, energy, and passion to work for change to join the ‘CBRM Youth Council Start Up Committee.’ This committee will make important decisions on the formation of CBRM’s First Youth Council. They will make decide: the structure of the council (how many members, when do they meet, how are the youth chosen – are they elected, nominated, etc). This Start Up Committee will be a great opportunity to have your voice heard.

The Start Up Committee will begin meeting in early September 2014 (in the Mayor’s Boardroom at CBRM). So, please, if you are a young person between the ages of 16-22 we ask you to join the Start Up Committee. No prior experience and/or skills are necessary. We are hoping for a large group of interested young people from every area of the CBRM. The more opinions and ideas the better the Youth Council will be. This is your chance to make a difference in your community.

Note: The Start Up Committee is not the CBRM Youth Council. The Start Up Committee will decide the structure of the Youth Council. Once the structure for the Youth Council is decided, the Start Up Committee will be finished their task. This committee will have put a process in place to select the actual members of the First CBRM Youth Council.
